Stepping onto the ice for the first time or transitioning toward competitive figure skating comes with plenty of questions. Here you will find essential details on gear, lesson logistics, rink fees, and what to expect during coaching sessions with Valeriya in Inland Empire, California.

Frequently asked questions

Find clear answers to commonly asked questions about lessons, apparel recommendations, training schedules, and rink guidelines before your first day on the ice.

What should I wear to my first ice skating lesson?

While there is specialized figure skating attire available, comfortable athletic wear is more than enough. Wear warm sweatpants or fleece-lined leggings, a warm jacket, and fitted gloves. Knee pads are strongly recommended to cushion falls (volleyball knee pads work exceptionally well on the ice). Many skaters also choose to wear protective butt-pads. If you are breaking in new personal skates, bring silicone gel pads to relieve pressure points.

Can I practice on rental skates or do I need my own?

You are welcome to begin practicing on rental skates provided by the rink. Rentals are fine for your first exploratory sessions, but investing in properly fitted figure skates with supportive ankles is strongly encouraged once you commit to steady progress.

Who do you teach?

All ages and all levels are welcomed! From toddlers and complete beginners taking their first steps on the ice to adult skaters and aspiring competitive figure skaters, coaching programs are tailored to each skater's goals.

What is the difference between a public session and a freestyle session?

A public session (free skate) is open to the general community at all speeds for recreational fun. A freestyle session is reserved specifically for figure skaters and coaches to practice technical jumps, spins, choreography, and competitive routines with specialized music playback.

How many hours should a beginner skate if they want to be competitive?

Beginners with competitive aspirations should ideally practice several hours each week (8-10h) on the ice, combining private lessons with dedicated solo practice sessions to build fundamental edge control, stamina, and jump mechanics early on.

Why do I need to do off-ice training?

Off-ice training builds essential core strength, leg power, balance, and flexibility required for technical rotations on the ice. Practicing jump technique and stretching safely off the ice prevents injury and significantly accelerates your on-ice results.

Is rink admission or skate rental included in the lesson fee?

No, ice entry and skate rentals are not included in the private coaching fee. Rink admission is paid separately directly to the rink box office upon arrival.

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

A 24-hour advance notice is strictly required for any lesson cancellation or rescheduling. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours of notice will be charged the full amount of the scheduled class.
